One of our main goals in this series is to prove to you that you can read, understand and interpret the Bible’s teaching for yourselves. The only barrier to this is you reading for yourselves and investing time in what God has written down for us. As you engage the verses below we are praying that God would give you eyes to see and ears to hear. Let this be the beginning of a conversation on what the Bible says. If you have questions or thoughts, let’s talk..

According to these verses, who knows when Jesus will return? Who does NOT know?

“However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows. “When the Son of Man returns, it will be like it was in Noah’s day. In those days before the flood, the people were enjoying banquets and parties and weddings right up to the time Noah entered his boat. People didn’t realize what was going to happen until the flood came and swept them all away. That is the way it will be when the Son of Man comes.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭24:36-39‬ ‭NLT‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

“However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows. And since you don’t know when that time will come, be on guard! Stay alert!”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭13:32-33‬ ‭NLT‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

“So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?” He replied, “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know.
‭‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭1:6-7‬ ‭NLT‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

In the next set of three verses, what imagery is used to describe how Jesus’ return will be?

“But the day of the Lord will come as unexpectedly as a thief. Then the heavens will pass away with a terrible noise, and the very elements themselves will disappear in fire, and the earth and everything on it will be found to deserve judgment.”
‭‭2 Peter‬ ‭3:10‬ ‭NLT‬‬‬‬‬‬

“Now concerning how and when all this will happen, dear brothers and sisters, we don’t really need to write you. For you know quite well that the day of the Lord’s return will come unexpectedly, like a thief in the night. When people are saying, “Everything is peaceful and secure,” then disaster will fall on them as suddenly as a pregnant woman’s labor pains begin. And there will be no escape.”
‭‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭5:1-3‬ ‭NLT‬‬‬‬‬‬

“Understand this: If a homeowner knew exactly when a burglar was coming, he would keep watch and not permit his house to be broken into. You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭24:43-44‬ ‭NLT‬‬‬‬

What are some signs that the next group of passages say will happen before Jesus comes? Are all of these true today?

“You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!”
‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭3:1-5‬ ‭NLT‬‬‬‬‬‬

“And you will hear of wars and threats of wars, but don’t panic. Yes, these things must take place, but the end won’t follow immediately. Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in many parts of the world. But all this is only the first of the birth pains, with more to come. “Then you will be arrested, persecuted, and killed. You will be hated all over the world because you are my followers. And many will turn away from me and betray and hate each other. And many false prophets will appear and will deceive many people. Sin will be rampant everywhere, and the love of many will grow cold.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭24:6-12‬ ‭NLT‬‬‬‬‬‬

‬‬“Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons. These people are hypocrites and liars, and their consciences are dead. They will say it is wrong to be married and wrong to eat certain foods. But God created those foods to be eaten with thanks by faithful people who know the truth.”
‭‭1 Timothy‬ ‭4:1-3‬ ‭NLT‬‬‬‬‬‬

“Most importantly, I want to remind you that in the last days scoffers will come, mocking the truth and following their own desires. They will say, “What happened to the promise that Jesus is coming again? From before the times of our ancestors, everything has remained the same since the world was first created.” They deliberately forget that God made the heavens long ago by the word of his command, and he brought the earth out from the water and surrounded it with water. Then he used the water to destroy the ancient world with a mighty flood.”
‭‭2 Peter‬ ‭3:3-6‬ ‭NLT‬‬‬‬‬‬
